AHPN Response: SOUTH AFRICAN CABINET APPROVES HIV AND AIDS UPSCALE

Date: 12-03-2010

The African HIV Policy Network (AHPN) commends the South African government for the decision to upscale HIV prevention through widespread information, education and distribution of condoms ahead of World Cup 2010 which will see a surge of visitors to the country.

Many people from across the world, including the UK, will attend the first World Cup on the continent. Increasing HIV prevention and provision of treatment is a crucial and timely step to empower people to respond appropriately to the effect of mass tourism and human interactions. Undoubtedly people will be engaging in sex; therefore the right knowledge and easy access to condoms will be instrumental in reducing the transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

AHPN welcomes the UK government £1million donation towards increased condom provision to South Africa and will reinforce its national and global prevention messages to African communities living in the UK.
