UK Cuts May Hit HIV/Aids Programmes in Africa
Date: 11-06-2010
Chief Executive of UK's National Aids Trust (NAT) Ms Deborah Jack has expressed fears that the current wave of cuts in public spending by the new coalition government may affect some HIV/AIDS programmes in Africa.
Speaking at an African media event in London, Ms Jack said if the government carries out its extensive plans to cut public spending in its bid to reduce the country's huge deficit, many HIV/AIDS programmes targeting African countries would be axed.
The African media event, organised by African HIV Policy Network (AHPN) in partnership with The Trumpet Newspaper and supported by the National Aids Trust was aimed at exploring how the HIV sector can work with the media to create greater awareness about HIV, sexual health and general well-being among African communities in the UK.
She said her organisation will make strong case against cutting funds for its AIDS programmes, and noted that the UK spear-headed the global campaign for HIV/AIDs treatment and awareness, especially in Africa.
Publisher of The Trumpet Newspaper Mr. Femi Okutubo spoke on the corporate responsibility for increasing awareness about HIV among African communities in the UK.
Chief Executive of AHPN Dr. Ade Adeagbo noted that working closely with the media was a fundamental platform to deliver "key messages about awareness, education and prevention of HIV to African communities in the UK."
