The NHS Leadership Academy has announced the partners it will be working with to deliver the largest ever NHS leadership programme. The programme will involve leadership development at foundation, mid and senior levels, the Academy says: "The new approach will see a range of NHS staff – including doctors, nurses, Allied Health Professionals, healthcare scientists, and HR and finance staff – learn how to lead their teams andor services to achieve better, more compassionate patient care."
AHPN welcomes this initiative, and hope that it is delivered in a targeted manner to improve the aspirations and career opportunities for BME staff in the NHS workforce. BME staff make up 20% of the NHS workforce but are under-represented in leadership positions. This new programme has the potential to rectify the imbalance in NHS leadership, if the delivery of the programmme is targeted to address these inequalities and meet the needs of diverse staff. AHPN's 20:20 African Health Professionals Network was designed to respond to inequalities in the NHS and support African healthcare staff to pursue leadership opportunities.
