Jonathan Malia was a healthy 24 year old man who voluntarily sought treatment for depression on the 4th of January. Two weeks later, he died in hospital after being sectioned and detained. His death is another in a line of tragic deaths of black men in mental health detention. Unacceptable delays mean many of their families still do not know what led to their deaths. AHPN supports call for independent investigations into each of these deaths, leading to systemic change to prevent further tragedies. The details of Jonathan Malia's care are reported in The Independent, where Matilda MacAttram of Black Mental Health UK also writes a powerful comment piece calling for change.
