Faith & HIV - Changing Perspectives

The AHPN has (through the NAHIP programme) developed resources for Christian and Muslim faith leaders and African community based organisations. The materials are used to increase levels of awareness on HIV and to change perceptions of HIV and Africans in the UK. The AHPN also advocates for the participation of faith leaders in informing key policies regarding HIV and African communities and encourages an active approach to challenging stigma and raising awareness.

Great effort is being invested to bridge the gaps between faith leaders and the HIV sector through dialogue and cooperation in strategic planning, events and support services for people living with and affected by HIV. The AHPN will continue to work closely with faith leaders, communities and media to highlight the pivotal role of faith communities in providing a supportive environment for HIV related work.

In 2009 the AHPN will pilot clergy training for the Anglican Church in Southwark Dioceses in London. Theology being the central focus for assessing the impact of HIV and addressing issues of public awareness and epidemiological facts, the training aims to introduce the topic as part of continual ministerial education. Attendees will be given the opportunity to engage with a range of issues and learn of key organisations that can enable future partnerships and assistance.

A Directory of faith based groups undertaking work with HIV is to be launched in the near future and will be a practical tool which can be used to signpost services and CBOs across the UK. A hard copy will be complemented by an electronic version that can be accessed on our website.
